“Wild Rose” is a modern classic gaff-rigged cutter cleverly designed to be pretty, functional and safe. Being one of the earlier boats produced, she has the arguably preferable “Two and a Loo” layout below decks so that the fore-cabin has a sea toilet and is used for storage whilst the saloon has the galley in the conventional location at the after end adjacent to the main hatch and there are two full length settee berths that do not intrude into the cockpit lockers. The gimballed galley stove has two burners and grill and is served by a gas bottle housed in drained stowage at the after end of the cockpit. Chart table folds down over the stove.
Soon after we acquired the boat ten years ago we had the rather thin settee mattresses re-made with extra foam and re-covered to create two really comfortable berths.
All main control lines come back to the generous cockpit so that one can even reef the mainsail without going up on deck. The main sheet track is mounted on the after cockpit coaming so that it doesn't get in the way and there are cavernous cockpit lockers Port and Starboard plus the drained gas bottle locker aft.
The bowsprit increases overall length by 5ft but is hinged at the inboard end so that it can be lifted to save unnecessary cost on marina berths or to assist with tight manoeuvring and is used as a cantilever for raising and lowering the mast. The easily lifted keel allows for beaching and creek-crawling which is particularly helpful around Falmouth where we sail. Draft is 2ft-4in with plate up and 5ft-0in fully down.
Samson post, tabernacle, mooring cleats, chainplates etc are of stainless steel and all deck gear is top quality.
The original fit speed/depth instrument has been replaced in August 2018 by a new Raymarine i50 series Tridata unit.
The boat sails very well, points reasonably high for a gaffer and the rig is well balanced so she carries little weather helm and will sail herself given the right conditions
TheYanmar 1GM10 single cylinder 9HP inboard marine diesel engine with shaft drive to 3 bladed propeller has proved to be a very reliable and effective alternative source of power that is particularly easy to maintain as it has sufficient space around it to allow access and is extraordinarily economical to run. It has been winterised every Autumn, serviced every Spring and gives the boat a 4.5kt cruising speed with 6kts maximum.
There is a Teleflex single lever control lever and instrument panel in the cockpit and the 12v electrics are served by 2 x 86Ah deep cycle batteries.
A substantial road trailer by Lizard Trailers (that has never been immersed in water), hydraulic jack with 3 ton capacity for lifting it to remove wheels and a tailored overall tarpaulin cover are also on offer if required for a further £1500.
This boat has been exceptionally well maintained throughout her life, stored ashore under cover during the Winter months and shows little sign of wear. She may be viewed on her mooring in Falmouth Harbour, Cornwall.
